The research fields
The Workaround project focuses on three types of algorithmic management technologies, chosen for their growing use in professional environments. The complementary nature of these technologies will enable us to grasp the specificities of circumvention practices, and identify cross-cutting patterns and logics.
Field 1 : Activity tracking technologies (bossware)

These technologies refer to software capable of tracking a variety of metrics, such as time spent on certain tasks, frequency of breaks, keyboarding, websites visited, and other aspects of worker behavior.
Field 2 : Emotion recognition technologies (AI-powered sentiment analysis)

These technologies use AI, in particular machine learning and language processing techniques, to identify, extract, quantify and study affective states and emotional information expressed in textual data sources.
Field 3 : Crowdworking platforms

These online platforms aim to optimize on-demand work by connecting freelancers with employers or customers to perform “micro-tasks” (e.g., identifying objects in photos, labeling images, or translating short texts).
